NEW Swim Lesson Levels

A Renewed Focus on Safety and New Level Names

Here at the Y, we strive each and every day to improve the health and well-being of our community. With a focus on Youth Development, we are able to strengthen the community by providing quality programming, instruction, and experiences.

The Aquatics Department has taken Youth Development to heart with a new Swim Lesson Curriculum beginning with Spring 2 and Summer programming. Here is a brief summary of why we updating our swim lessons:

More focused approach on safety in and around the water at all levels and all weeks of lessons.

- Asking permission before getting in the water
- Teaching children to “swim, float, swim”
- Teaching children to push off the bottom of the pool and grab the wall if they do fall in accidentally (jump, push, turn, grab)
- Teaching children to tread water.

Teaching safety and ensuring youth feel comfortable in the water BEFORE teaching strokes.  Children must have the correct body position before they can swim without a float belt.

Certified swim lesson instructors to increase consistency across the different levels.  All La Crosse Area Family YMCA staff will be YSL certified.
