This is a long-term part-time position with openings at the  La Crosse and  Onalaska branches and is open to female and male trainers. 

Personal trainers are responsible for the development and incorporation of training programs for members of the Y. The trainer provides accurate fitness information, plans effective programs, and addresses participant’s questions. Personal trainers possess the ability to motivate participants at all skill and fitness levels, along with the ability to identify incorrect lifting techniques and how to correct the individual. The trainer is also responsible for all scheduling of clients and tracking accurate records of client’s attendance and payment history.

Key Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills
  • National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) nationally recognized Personal Training Certification such as NSCA, ACSM, NASM or ACE
  • Adult and child CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
  • YMCA Fitness Assessment Certification or experience in this area is a plus

Hoop to Heal (AKA Trauma-Informed Sports) is a fun and creative way that uses basketball to help kids heal. It’s a brand new program that blends the evidence-based principles of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and the demonstrated benefits of physical exercise—in this case, basketball – into one program that helps kids cope with difficult or traumatic experiences they’ve had in their life. The program helps kids understand how their brain may have been shaped by those difficult life experiences, and allows them to practice coping skills, first in basketball, and then in real life. 

 

Coaches will receive training prior to the program and programming will be held at Hamilton Elementary school one night per week.

 

Key Qualifications:

  • Coaches must have a basic understanding of how trauma impacts children’s decision making including (but not limited to):
    • how they react when they’re upset
    • what role avoidance may play in their life
    • general decisions they make on a day-to-day basis.
  • Knowing basketball is also a positive.
