Role Model & Inclusion Program Volunteer
Working one-on-one with athletes with special needs, James Hamilton loves volunteering for the La Crosse Area Family YMCA’s inclusion programs. As the only local Y’s inclusion volunteer under the age of 16, James connects well with the participants and is a fantastic role model. A Y volunteer for two years, James believes in the Y’s outstanding inclusion programs, such as Miracle League and Basketball for All. “These programs don’t discriminate upon ability or disability but focus on the fun of the game,” James says. “The compassion present at these events does not stop with the players. The volunteers and staff learn lessons in compassion and inclusion as well.” This positive atmosphere resonates throughout all local Y facilities, where smiling staff and an accommodating environment meets people everywhere. “If I were in a wheelchair, I would really love to participate in the Y’s inclusion programs; they teach morals as well as sports skills,” James says.
